I was recruiting fellow levergun shooters, and put up a notice to that effect at Durbanville Shooting Range. Fellow called me, asked whether I would like a levergun. Does a bear... I mean, yesplease.
It's a Savage '99 in 300 Savage. The 300 Savage is sort of the little brother of the 308 Winchester, and compares to the 308 Winchester like the 308 compares to the 30-06.
The Ammo Guy has an excellent series of photographs showing how the 7.62 NATO (308 Winchester) cartridge was developed starting from the 300 Savage.
37.8 grains of S341 gives me 2200 fps and 37.7 grains of S335 gives me 2350 fps. The S335 load might be slightly more accurate, but with open sights it's hard to tell.
